genius hour reflections

Humanities genius Hour project

Have you ever had terrible foot pains but you have no time to sit down and ice your foot. Well if that’s the case then I have a new product for you Healing Socks the socks that have built on ice packs. A lot of athletes have feet problems such as athlete’s foot, plantar fasciitis, bunions, heel pain, and many more. So that is why I created healing socks for busy people with busy feet.

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that causes red, dry flaking skin sometimes accompanied by pain or itching. This condition occurs between the toes on the soles or on the side of the feet. Fungal infections like athletes foot are often found in showers, gyms, dressing rooms, swimming pool lockers or other warm damp areas where fungus can grow. The name of this condition comes from the fact that athletes spend most of their time in these environments.

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation caused by excessive stretching of the plantar fascia which is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot attaching to the heel bone, when the plantar fascia is excessively stretched, this can cause plantar fasciitis, which can also lead to heel pain, arch pain, and heel spurs.

Bunions are one of the most common forefoot problems. A bunion is a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint. This condition is caused mostly by both men and women wearing improper foot wear, such as tight narrow dress shoes. This leads to the formation of a bunion.

Heel pain is a common condition in which weight bearing on the heel causes extreme discomfort. Caused too much impact on a specific area of the foot. This condition often referred to as "heel pain syndrome," can be caused by shoes with heels that are too low

These are only some of the many feet conditions and they can all be healed by just applying ice or heat to the injured area but who has the time to do that any more.

The healing socks are very easy to make all you need is

1.     2 pairs of socks
2.     2 heel cushions
3.     and a sewing kit

The fist step to creating your very own Healing Socks is to find 2 pairs of socks one for you to wear in your feet and one that you can cut in half so it creates a pocket

Step 2 is to place the heel cushions in the freezer to make an ice pack
Then sew the sock that is cut in half onto the heel and around the toe of the sock and place the sponge into the pockets,

And that’s it!! Only 3 simple steps. But remember only to wear your healing socks for 10-15 minutes.

My fist idea was to create the ice pack with a sponge but it was too thick and wouldn’t fit in the pocket. My second idea was to use gel pads but they could pop easily if to much weight was put onto them. So I settled on the heel cushions because it was my idea to place them into the freezer to make an ice pack. Nowhere on the package does it say that it can be placed in the freezer. The heel cushions are re usable, and are great because they soft and squishy so you can walk around with it on instead of a hard heavy ice pack. Healing Socks can relieve pain and ease discomfort at the ball or bottom of your foot. This product can also prevent or reduce swelling, reduce muscle pains and can reduce bleeding into the tissues

I decided to create Healing Socks because I was always getting pain in my feet from dance and I had no time to just sit down and take a minute to ice my feet. A lot of my fellow dancers also have this problem and the pain gets worse and worse because we have no time to ice our feet.

I created this product specifically for athletes and I’m sick and tired of watching my marathon running mom hobble around the house saying “I have no time to ice my sore feet” well now you do.

So if you ever have pain in your feet just follow these 3 simple steps to relive your pain.
