What Did We Do?

First we went over the paragraph booklets, our teacher was going over what was assigned and instructions for the next assignments. We went over questions and answered them for people that were unclear about the instructions. Next we were told to work on our critiques for our lit circle novel. We needed to put at least ten pros and cons to our story. We worked on our individual critiques while the teacher came around to check every body's.

Why?

We went over the booklet to make sure everybody had a clear understanding on hat needed to be done. We do the booklet to be able to improve our paragraphs and writing skills. We wrote a critique about our novel because we want to try and practice our constructive criticism and be able to identify each part ( ex. we had to be able to think about the target audience and be able to identify the pros and cons about the book). We also wanted to try and back up our points with specific details and examples from the story. That way our points become more reasonable

Reflections and Connections

Criticism is important even outside of novels. Since we are identifyingstuff like the pro's and con's and finding the target audience. WE are building up our constructive criticism. We can use this skill for a wide variety, whether it's a poem or even a movie. Being able to find the pints and improve upon benefits both your own skills and youracademic skills. Also to improve our writing skills is going to be very useful as well as developing paragraphs because we are going to needing that skill quite a lot in our high school life, we also want to be able to develop our explanation skills

Homework Reminders

For block 1: remember to work on your paragraph booklet.
The first four paragraphs will be due Friday.

Homework Tips

If you ever need help remember to ask your study buddy or even just your friend from Humanities.
Don't be afraid to ask Ms.Lees any questions about the paragraphs.

Three Words

Hi, my name is Josh and these are my three words to strive for in 2015.

Friendliness
There are lots of new people in high school and I want to be more social and meet more people. This would be a change for me because I am usually awkward and I have trouble talking to people. This way I would probably be made fun of less often.

Grades
I was not very happy with my grades this term, I think I did well but could have done much better, I was not happy with one mark in particular where I was getting a very high A but it was cut by about 12%. I thought I could have done a little better than that, because my mark only needed to be a little bit higher and I would have had an A.

Organization
I have said this before quite a few times but I am not the most organized person. I want to be more organized by having all my work done before the deadline, and well before the deadline. I also want to use my agenda more, so that I can keep track of what is due, when and to which teacher. However, I also want to have my handouts and papers more organized in the right binders in the right spot. Organization is something that I want to work on in general to, not just with school. I have a tendency to forget things so this will probably help me with that as well.

So those are my three New Year’s words!

learning blog

WHAT DID WE DO? On Friday December 12th we held our lit circle discussions on our novel, made group and self goals for future conversations and did a group and self evaluation sheet . Each member of the Lit Circle group discusses about a certain section in the novel. We choose a quote that we can make connections to or that we found meaningful. Everyone should lead the discussion for at least 5-10 minutes. While 1 group is having a conversation the other group is observing us and tallying every time we make connections, ask questions and contribute ideas to make the conversation flow. Once all the people have finished discussing we switch so the other can hold their conversation.

WHY? The learning intentions for the activities were to make connections with other pieces of text, real life and our selves, practicing our oral communication skills and collaboration skills, goal setting/reflections and listening skills.

REFLECTIONS AND CONNECTIONS: I think that having the lit circles have already given me more confidence on my oral communication skills. These simple skills will help you a lot in school. When you are giving an oral presentation you have to speak loud with confidence, make eye contact and engage with the audience. I feel like I have improved a lot with this skill in three weeks so I can’t wait to see my growth by the end of the year.

Homework reminders: innovation fair proposals are due on Monday as well as our lit circle discussions #3 and #4. Don’t forget that Ms.Lees is open for flex at 11:15 on Thursday in room 213. Keep working on the paragraph booklets because they are due soon. That’s all for today Bye!!!

3 Words

Hello my name is Shirley and I'm here to present my three words that I strive for 2015.
The challenge is to come up with three words that you want to live by or a goal for the New Years.

Open: I have to the bad habit of always concealing my feelings and bottling them up. This word means I want to be able to express my feelings more openly and freely. To be able to tell someone how I feel even if it's hard.

Relaxed: I can be really hard on myself and my self esteem is quite low. So I want to be a bit more laid back and go easier on myself because if I'm being too hard on myself, it'll only add to my stress and that's not good for my health.

Health: I have always been conscious about my health, both mentally and physically. I want to be become more cautious because you can always achieve higher. I want to be able to eat right and exercise more. Because this will help benefit me in many ways.

For more information on the challenge you can visit it here -->http://sheownsit.com/forget-year-resolutions-just-pick-three-words-live-your-life-by/

Have a nice day everybody!

three words

Three Words

Hi my name is Sophie and my three words for inspiration are patience, positivity and control. I chose patience because last year I lost patience when I was practicing my front aerial. I thought that this year I would put a lot of effort into achieving my front aerial, but to do that I must have patience. Last year I always looked on the negative side of things so I thought that this year I can focus on the positive outcome. I chose the word control because to get my front aerial I need to have control over my arms and my lower back. I have a really flexible back so this goal may be harder to manage but I am up for the challenge.

3 words

3 Words

1. Effort: I want to put more effort into 2 things. Number one is school because if you do well in school ( get good grades) you can get a good job, get into a good university and overall be a more successful person. Number two is basketball but that's just because i really like to play basketball.

2. Brave: Unlike before I don't want to just awkwardly stand aside and not go up and talk to people or try and do something. No I'm actually going to take the chance and do those things. Even if I look like a fool or mess up at least I tried.

3. Quiet: This may contradict my previous word but often times when i start talking.... I can't stop.
Like I just have the inability to be quiet. I talk way to much and bore the other person away. I want to try and stop doing that and learn to keep my mouth closed.

Learning Blog 10/12/14 block 1

What Did we Do?

For the first hour I believe, we were marking the re-tests for our short story test. After we handed that in, we moved onto silent reading for the last thirty minutes, so we can find a test to discuss in our lit circle group.

Why Did We Do This(Learning Intentions)

For the re-test: To improve our mark from the first test and to see where we are at with our skills in identifying the PLOT. If there are places where we are struggling we can see that visually right in front of us and improve on our errors
For Silent Reading: It gives us an opportunity to find a test to discuss in our lit circle group for Friday.

Reflections and Connections

When you read over your test results. Being able to identify your errors and build from there is a skill that you can use anywhere, especially if you're in school. When you are able to identify the mistakes and improve upon them it not only helps you build skills but you're also learning more when you make errors.

Homework Reminders

For block 1: you are to do your lit circle dialectical journals
Due: Friday
Homework Tips

If you are stuck or cannot find a quote on which you can discuss, you are free to ask any of your lit circle group members for help.
If you are still stuck, ask an adult or even your older siblings to help you

What did we do?

Today in class we worked on our paragraph booklets or if your like me you finished any of the sheets that go with your report card.

Why did we do it? (Learning Intentions)

Well the whole point of our paragraph booklets is number one teach us how to write a proper paragraph, like how a paragraph should be 5-9 sentences. Two is to generally help improve our writing and make it more clear and easy to read. The point of the self-assessment sheets are for you to reflect on how you did in term one. Also on what you learned in term one.

Reflections and Connections

Learning how to write a paragraph is one of the fundamentals of writing. If you learn how to write a paragraph you can move on to more advanced things like writing essays. If you don't know how to write a proper paragraph writing is going to be hard and will probably be bad. In university and in other post-secondary schools if you don't know how to write a paragraph your at a major disadvantage. Even in jobs if you don't know how to write a paragraph for say a report, it's going to be bad. Self assessing is key in order to help recover from say you lost a game. You figure out what you did wrong and don't do it next time.

Homework Reminders

- The Descriptive paragraph portion of your paragraph booklets are due tomorrow
- You are supposed to make two comments on on other people in your blogs posts
- Learning Blogs if you have Tuesday

IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE THESE YET, DO THEM:
- Lit circle group discussion and goals/reflections ( 2 stars and 2 wishes) both for individual and your group

Homework Tips

Try and make your comments very descriptive and unique, don't repeat things others have already commented on. Use any feedback you have received on your learning blogs before and apply it now.

Learning Blog

Today we worked on the paragraph booklet which was about how to write proper paragraph, organization, proof reading, editing and how to use our formal writing tone. The booklet will also help us lengthen our paragraphs so we will be prepared to write essays later on in the year. A proper paragraph should be 5-9 sentences long with one main idea and supportive details to support the main idea.

The learning intentions for the paragraph booklet are proof reading/ self evaluating your work, organization skills, making connections and sentence structure.

The paragraph booklet is due in 2 weeks, innovation fair proposals are due on Tuesday and unscrambling the sentences is due on Monday. Don’t forget that you can come to flex time at lunch if you need help with your innovation fair projects in room D105. Also, remember to highlight the main ideas in the booklet. Just a reminder that we have our Lit Circle conversations on Monday so be prepared with your dialectical journal for our discussions about our novel. Have a great weekend everyone!!

Block 2 Learning Log 2014-12-3

Hi, I will be writing about the second block of our Wednesday double block.

1. We started the block by receiving two booklets, one was a self-assessment about our reading and writing skills. Also we started working on a paragraph booklet about proper sentence and paragraph composition.
*Remember, we are supposed to unscramble the paragraphs on a different paper.
Lastly, some of us who could not use the stapler earlier handed in the dialectal journals.

2. The first booklet's learning intention was to let us assess whether we can make meaningful connections, identify theme, review our usage of formal language etc. We also had to pick assignments that would provide evidence to support our decision, that also helps with finding textual evidence to support ideas in stories.
The paragraph booklet was mostly to work on paragraph and sentence structure, but it was also to extend the length of our connections in our dialectical journals. So aim for five to nine sentences in paragraphs. We also handed in our dialectical journals and self-assessment that went with it so Ms. Lees can see what we improved upon and what we still need help with.

3. Self-assessing and goal setting is always important in life, it helps with finding errors, and things to improve upon, or what you did well and your are improving on. Goal setting also helps with moving forward in any subject area. Paragraph and sentence structure is important when writing just about anything, so it is always be important to have good writing skills.

4. The reading self-assessment is due this Friday ( Dec. 5) the paragraph booklet is due in a couple of weeks and is on going, make sure to highlight all the important details, that is the point. Also, the Genius Hour conferences are started soon so be prepared for that. The innovation week form is also due on the 9th of December.

5.The self-assessment is individual so you can't get help with that. The paragraph booklet is more memorizing information from the booklet so you can not get much help for that.

The Innovation Fair form's deadline is approaching so if you need help with that you can go to room D105 in the new wing during lunch.

That is all,

Josh

Block 1 Learning Log 2014-12-3

What did we do?
1.Collected Lit circle discussion and rubric reflection.
The main thing we did was trouble shooting and learning how to use the blog. We answered questions such as Jasper's question about the innovation fair proposal. We starting giving some constructive criticism are the learning logs that were already posted. After we started showing each other how to set up pages, how to change your template and settings on each other's blog because some people needed assistance on their blogs.

Learning Intentions
So we can improve our digital literacy and be able to become familiar with blogger. We also want to be able to navigate around blogger more easily, rather than having to actually try and find.We also want to become more familiar with the tools presented in the settings, such advance setting for example. There are many tools used in settings and we want to be able to identify want they are and what their use is.

Reflection and Connections
To be able to navigate and get familiar with settings is a great tool to use when we want to customize our own face book profile, or if we have our own blog, then we want to be able to figure out the tools used.
It's really useful to get familiar with a web site's or blogs setting tools.
For the criticism it's important to be able to come up with a feedback that will be easy to understand and not bring the person down. What I mean is we don't want to hurt the person or make themselves feel restricted.
This is why we're learning how to give a good constructive criticism

Homework Reminders
Self assessments
Due Friday
Paragraph Writing for Outline and Developing the Paragraph
We'll be working on it for the next few weeks
Don't forget tomorrow at 11:15 there is a re-test for your short story quiz

Homework Tips
Feel free to ask Ms.Lees any questions and also ask your peers that have some digital knowledge.
Also you may ask questions on our group blog(link is in the blog list) for any help. Don't try to learn it all at once, learn it at your own pace.

What did we do?

Today we did our lit circle group discussions and observations.. Each member of a Lit circle group talked about a piece of text they found meaningful or important along with there response to it. There was another group who observed this group talk and discuss, while recording how many times somebody does this or that. These 2 groups then switched out when the 1 was done talking.

Why did we do it (learning intentions)

There are several skills we build by doing this discussion and observation process. By observing we build our listening skills. By discussing we build our oral skills, collaboration skills and also listening skills. They also help you connect to the story you are reading. Whether it be a connection to yourself, the text or to the world you learn to make connections from the story to something.

Reflections and Connections

Skills like these are very useful for any time in life you are working with a group or another person. Oral skills allow you to communicate in a well spoken and efficient manner. Collaboration skills  are essential for any group work. If your not meeting up or not working with your group, there isn't any way you're going to get your work done.

Homework Reminders

Our homework for today is to write about something your group discussed or talked about and write what you and your group thought of it Also you can study if you want to take the re-test on Thursday.

Homework Tips

You can talk to someone in your Lit circle group about what you discussed and write about it. Other then that just think about some things your group discussed and pick one to write about. If your studying just go over your notes or past work we had.
